Summary:
dvocates practice trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and empowerment-based advocacy, which means that we believe that survivors know what is best for themselves and their families and our role is to help them navigate systems and barriers in order to create a safer, more hopeful future.
This full-time position provides domestic violence advocacy services for survivors of domestic violence within the public benefits system.
Time is divided between offices at the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) Community Service Offices (CSOs) in the Seattle area and the DAWN offices in the Kent area.
CSO offices are located in Capitol Hill, Belltown, Rainer and White Center.
The CSO Advocate supports survivors in navigating the TANF system to meet the requirements of DSHS and the survivor's own goals.
This advocate must have the capability to understand systems, how systems integrate with each other, and the willingness to advocate within the system on the survivor's behalf.
Sensitive to the emotions and experiences of others, the CSO Advocate will also provide crisis intervention and safety planning by supporting the survivor in setting goals to safeguard their emotional and physical wellbeing.
Advocacy will be happening in a context where survivors are experiencing both trauma and poverty.
This person is motivated, energetic, able to build positive relationships with other professionals, and a quick learner, driven to end violence in our communities.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Listens, supports, and provides trauma-informed, survivor-centered, empowerment-based advocacy for survivors of domestic violence and their children.
Supports survivors in creating safety where they feel they need it.
Provides support, information, and connection to resources to survivors needing help with a variety of issues, including emergency shelter, housing, basic needs, legal issues, immigration, and connection to mental health, children's services, or other specialized services as needed and in collaboration with other agencies.
Supports survivors in navigating various systems outside of DAWN, principally DSHS/TANF; works with survivors to develop and implement service plans based on goals identified by the survivor.
Develops strong relationships with service providers and acts as a liaison between clients and said providers.
Answers the 24-hour advocacy and support line during scheduled shifts.
Understands institutional barriers to services and support and works with outside systems and/or providers to improve the survivor's experience navigating the system.
Supports other advocates and team members in their work through consultations, training, or providing co-advocacy, especially in the areas where the advocate may have specific expertise or experience.
Maintains the strictest confidentiality protocols.
Provides timely completion of relevant paperwork, accurately enters data into multiple databases, and maintains complete and current client files.
Attends agency meetings, trainings, and community events.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge:

Have a passion for ending domestic violence, gender, racial, and economic inequality and for social justice, along with a commitment to DAWN's mission, vision, values, and policies/procedures.
Have a deep commitment to the value that survivors know what is best for themselves and their children, and an ability to suspend personal opinions to support survivors in their choices.
Values diversity and a commitment to equity in our community that are reflected in both the services offered to survivors as well as interactions within the team.
Willingness to safeguard the confidentiality of those we serve.
Have strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate well with people in crisis, the advocacy team, and community partners, and to communicate across cultures and with those who have limited English.
Have a calm, friendly demeanor that promotes collaboration, trust, and safety.
Must possess the ability to make sound judgments relating to crisis situations.
Enthusiastic about working within a team environment with dedicated, hardworking, and passionate colleagues.
Ability to complete paperwork and enter information into multiple databases on time and in detail, strong time management and organizational skills.

Physical Abilities:
Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, kneel, and twist on an intermittent basis including answering the front door, working on a computer/at a desk.
Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files and reach overhead.
Physically able to walk or run if needed, climb stairs without difficulty.

Other Requirements/Considerations:
This is a full-time position, at 40 hours per week to be typically worked during normal business hours.
The exact schedule is flexible and may be negotiated upon hire but is also dependent on the working hours of the CSO office.
DAWN offers both 5/8 and 4/10 schedule options.
Must complete DAWN's DVI training and obtain CPR/First Aid certification within 90 days of hire.
1-2 years of advocacy experience preferred or lived experience of domestic or gender-based violence in lieu of paid work experience will also be considered.
Some experience with Microsoft Office products:
Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred, Database experience (Osnium) a plus.
Mustprovide own transportation; possess a valid Washington State driver's license, proof of auto insurance and a clean driving record.
Must be able to pass Washington State criminal background check and enhanced DSHS background checks.

DAWN is a holistic domestic violence agency located in South King County supporting survivors of domestic violence, the community, and other social services agencies towards the goal of ending domestic violence.
Through our wide variety of programming, we strive to serve survivors wherever they are in their relationships, meeting their needs as they prioritize them, and working with them physically wherever they deem safe, within the South King County region.
Our programs include a 24-hour advocacy support hotline, confidential emergency shelter, mobile/community advocacy, support groups, legal advocacy, immigrant advocacy, children's advocacy, mental health services, TANF advocacy, prevention and education services, and the marketplace food program.
While working with us, survivors and their families are offered advocacy, resources, and a safe place to begin again.
